Bahrain Mirror: The detained Bahraini Dr. Saeed Al-Samahiji has been on hunger strike for six days now, according to a statement by his family given on Friday (February 19, 2016), expressing its concern over his health since he suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes.
Al-Samahiji, who is being held in pretrial detention at Dry Dock Prison, is facing charges over tweets he had sent on his personal Twitter account, in which he condemned Saudi Arabia's execution of prominent Saudi Shiite cleric, Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr.
Dr. Al-Samahiji complained about neglect and not receiving proper treatment and basic medications in prison. He also criticized how detainees are exposed to torture, insults, and ill-treatment during family visits, adding that they don't have a chance to communicate properly with their families due the glass barrier separating them.
Detainees at Dry Dock Prison had stated a day earlier that the prison authorities treat them like animals and force them to make animal sounds after torturing them.
