SIU Received 14 Torture & Mistreatment Complaints, Questioned 23 Policemen Accused of Torture in October

Bahrain Mirror: Member of the Bahraini Special Investigation Unit, Ibrahim Al-Kuwari, said that the unit received during October 14 complaints, including 7 allegations of torture and 6 claims of mistreatment by security forces. The unit has started investigations into all the complaints.
He added "In the framework of the circulated cases, the unit listened to the statements of 14 victims and 22 witnesses in different cases and interrogated suspects of the security forces. The unit also refereed a victim to the psychiatrist for psychological examination."
Al-Kuwari further stated "Within the framework of the cases referred to the court, two verdicts were issued in two different cases which included allegations of two prisoners who were beaten while being in the reform and rehabilitation center. The court handed down a 3-month jail term in the first case to an accused of the public security members and acquitted in the second case two suspects of the public security members of the charges attributed to them. On the other hand, the first high appeals court acquitted two members of the public security members of the torturing charge."
