Bahrain Mirror: Labour MP in House of Commons of the United Kingdom Emily Thornberry asked the British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, on March 6, 2017, about the UK Government's policy regarding the proposed Swiss statement at the UN Human Rights Council on Bahrain; and if he is to issue a statement.

Responding to MP Thornberry, Boris said on Thursday (March 9, 2017) "We understand the Swiss are no longer proposing a statement on Bahrain at the UN Human Rights Council," adding "The UK plans to reference Bahrain in our National Statement under Item Two."

Johnson stated "The UK will continue to engage the Government of Bahrain on its reform agenda, and where we have concerns about human rights we will continue to raise them at an appropriate level, both in private and in public."

Barnoess Tonge, from House of Lords, raised a question to the British government on the same day, on whether they intend to sign the Swiss resolution condemning human rights abuses in Bahrain at the 34th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In another question, Baroness Tonge asked the government what representations they have made to the government of Bahrain concerning the planned executions of Hussein Ali Mousa and Mohammad Ramadan.

For his part, Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will make an assessment of the effect of the proposed constitutional change in Bahrain to allow military courts to try civilians on human rights in that country. This change has been recently passed by House of Representatives and Shura Council, it is waiting for the king's approval to come into effect.
