Bahrain Mirror-Exclusive: SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights launched a campaign and petition to stop Brazil from exporting tear gas to Bahrain.
The organization said that Brazil has been one of the largest exporters of tear gas to Bahrain since 2011, which continues to be used excessively and arbitrarily to suppress peaceful protests in the country.
SALAM pointed out that the Brazilian company "Condor Technologies", based in Rio de Janeiro, sold more than 20 types of non-lethal weapons, including spraying tear gas to Bahrain. As a result of the deliberate excessive use of tear gas by the Bahraini government, more than 40 people have died in the past seven years from suffocation or short-distance shots.
SALAM's campaign that continues during 12-18 March comes in coincidence with the World Social Forum that will be held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, during the 13-17 March 2018, with the participation of civil society figures from around the world in order to address all forms of exploitation and oppression against human beings and to stand against anything that might destroy the environment.
Said Yousif Al-Muhafdah, SALAM's Deputy President said in this regard: "We have decided to make the most out of the World Social Forum in Brazil and to invest in launching a campaign and a petition aimed at the Brazilian government as an urgent appeal to stop exporting tear gas to Bahrain, either in directly or indirectly".
Al-Muhafdah also urged everyone to interact and sign the petition, which will be launched soon in four languages: Arabic, English, French and Portuguese and will be delivered to the Brazilian government at the end of the forum.
