Bahrain Mirror: Sayed Haidar Al-Sitri, one of the most prominent 90s uprising symbols who demanded the return of parliamentary life, died on Wednesday (August 31, 2022).
Sayed Haidar, son of Sitra Island, was known for his religious, social and political activities. He was also known for his many talents such as art and poetry. He devoted much of his life to serve the just national causes.
Al-Sitri was a working cleric and preacher. He was one of the supporters of the 1994 popular petition which demanded the enactment of the 1973 constitution.
He was arrested and deported out of the country along with Sheikh Ali Salman (Secretary General of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society) and Sheikh Hamza Al-Dairy on one plane to Dubai.
The three men arrived at London's Heathrow Airport and were gathered in the famous photograph taken by Dr. Mansour Al-Jamri, which was later published by most of the world's media newspapers and channels. This photo turned into an immortal one and was the uprising's first media victory, which established the return of parliamentary life in Bahrain later.
Al-Sitri didn't only work in politics and issuing statements in support of the 90s uprising, but also documented the pain of detainees and strugglers with a collection of poems.
Late Sayed Haidar Al-Sitri, who returned to the country in 2001, joined other strugglers to establish the largest political society born from the womb of the 90s uprising, Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society. In 2006, he ran for parliamentary elections as a candidate for Al-Wefaq and won the majority of votes as a candidate in Bahrain, where he received a total of 92% of the votes.
Sayed Haidar Al-Sitri, the struggler and poet, was also a painter. He used all his talents in the service of his religion, homeland and people.
